When it comes to keeping your home mold-free, a strong offense is your best defense! To prevent mold, eliminate moisture from your home and be aware of any possible signs of growth, such as musty smells or watermarks on ceilings and walls.

If you catch the mold early enough, it can be removed with bleach and water. Mold is generally not covered by a homeowner’s policy. They are not designed to cover the cost of cleaning and maintaing your home. If mold is caused as a direct result of a covered peril such as a pipe that burst, there would be coverage provided.
To help prevent mold in your home:

Reduce humidity in your home
  • Keep the humidity level in your home between 30% to 60% by using air conditions or dehumidifiers.
  • Put exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms
  • Do not let water accumulate under house plants.
Use mold reducing products
  • Clean bathrooms with bleach and other mold killing products
  • Add mold inhibitors to paints before application
Keep your home and belongings dry
  • Inspect all pipes, hoses and fittings. Consider replacing hoses to major appliances like washer and dishwasher every 5 years. Typical hoses usually cost around $5.00.
  • Keep gutters clean
  • Maintain your roof to prevent water from seeping into your home
  • Bathroom toilets
  • Washer
  • Water heater
Be careful after a flood or other water damage
  • Properly dry or remove soaked carpets, upholstery with in 24-48 hours after a flood to prevent mold growth. Anything that can not be dried should be discarded.
  • Wash and disinfect all areas that have been flooded. This includes walls, floors, shelves, closets, as well as air conditioning and heating systems.
